Bern Wallek

Bernid "Bern" Wallek is a character in the serial An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom.

Bern is the older brother of Fen Wallek, and grew up in Templestone before going to university. He is a student and an activist, working on issues of economic justice. His primary area of concern is the nascent slave trade in Incharis, spearheaded by the Duke of Valmouth. In his attempt to talk to Temmin and Ellika while they were out walking one day, Bern was severely beaten by their security detail. His injuries were substantial: both of his arms were broken, his right leg was broken in two places, his nose was broken, he got a concussion and several internal injuries. This is the worst, but far from the first, beating Bern has taken for his ideals.

He is spending quite some time at the Healer's House, the Tremontine equivalent of a hospital, and has racked up a sizable bill. It is there that he meets and befriends Ellika, who visits the Hearth as part of her duties at the Lovers' Temple, and manages to speak to her of his concerns.

Bern has his brother's freckles and blue eyes, but his hair is reddish-brown rather than the fiery tomato red that Fen sports.
