The Lovers' Temple is dedicated to the twin deities of Nerr, the Lover, and Neya, the Beloved.

Lover and Beloved are also the title for male and female priests of The Lovers. By the same token, the High Priests of the Lovers' Temple are known as the High Lover and the High Beloved. They live in the Lovers' Temple in the city of Tremont, which is also home to Allis Obby and her twin brother Issak Obby, the current Embodiments of the Lovers, as well as their Supplicants Anda Barrows, Bessa Vissek and Temmin. Prospective supplicants for the Lover's Temple apply through a process called The Chase. The Chase also refers to Nerr's pursuit of Neya, which forms the major portion of the Lovers' Temple's Spectacles.

The Lovers' Temple provides a range of services to the general population. The grand hallway is the place for petitioners to come and ask for a blessing. For more intimate requests, the Temple provides a number of Petitioning Rooms, where petitioners meet with sufficiently trained Temple staff. The activities in the Petitioning Rooms can range from simple talks about intimate issues or hand holding to intricate scenes involving bondage or sadomasochism.

For the physically or psychologically more dangerous activities, the Petitioning Rooms are monitored by another member of the Temple staff from an observation gallery. If a Lover or Beloved is raped in the course of Temple duties, the rapist is dealt with initially by the Brother's Temple and ultimately by the Father's Temple. Raping Temple staff is punishable by death as it is considered a direct offense against the gods.

To someone citing page 1032 verse 12 in Pagg’s Law, We seek refuge from the Parents and all of their Laws to a Lover or Beloved, the Lovers' Temple also provides asylum. Who is eligible for this particular service is not entirely clear, but it seems to extend to underage (less than 16 years old) lovers whose parents are against their relationship or marriage.

Teachings of the Lovers' Temple

In the Lovers' Temple, sex is about everything and everything is about sex. (Just as in the Brother's Temple, battle is about everything and everything is about battle, etc). The primary religious document is the Lovers' Testament. Other instruction specific to the Lovers' Temple includes:

The Patience of the Temple

The Patience of the Temple is a self-discipline exercise for delaying male orgasm during prolonged periods of sex. The basic way of teaching it is to have those learning it stop whatever they're doing when they feel themselves about to orgasm. A man is considered to have mastered it - "have the Patience in full" - when he can go through a complete set of the Sacred Eight (see below) without having an orgasm until the very end.

The Sacred Eight

The Sacred Eight are eight categories of sexual positions, each of which is associated with one of the eight primary deities for theological reasons. The categories are based on the relative positions of the giver (penetrating partner) and the receiver (one being penetrated), not the specific orifice or organ involved. Thus something like anal sex could fit multiple categories, depending on how it's done (or put another way, based on the subtext involved). The Sacred Eight are...

  • Way of Pagg: giver and receiver face each other with the giver on top (think missionary position), "for He is the Father and the Law."
  • Way of Amma: giver and receiver both face down with the giver on top (think doggie style), "for She is the Mother and the Lady of the Herds."
  • Way of Eddin: giver and receiver are seated and facing each other, the easiest position for seeing each other clearly, "for He is the Wise One and loves learning."
  • Way of Venna: giver stimulates the receiver without penetrating (the primary example is oral stimulation of a clitoris), "for She seeks union without penetration."
  • Way of Farr: giver penetrates the receiver's mouth with the receiver in a kneeling position (kneeling fellatio), "for He is the proud Warrior Whose foe kneels at His feet."
  • Way of Harla: receiver rides the giver (think cowgirl position), "for death rides us all."
  • Way of Nerr: giver and receiver are standing.
  • Way of Neya: giver and receiver lay side-by-side, "for it allows Her lover access to all of Her."
