Mattie Dunley

Mattisanis "Mattie" Dunley is the illegitimate daughter of King Harsin IV by a Whithorse Estate maidservant named Tellis Ambler, making her the half-sister of Temmin and his sisters. This proves problematic; not knowing they're related, Temmin coerces her into letting him kiss and grope her on his last night at home before leaving for the Capital. Mattie herself doesn't know, and is confused when not long afterwards her mother bundles her off to the Corrish city of Arren in the far northwest of Tremont; Temmin's mother Ansella has discovered the incident, and has bribed Tellis into take her daughter away for fear Temmin will take his half-sister as a mistress.
Mattie is an only child. Her stepfather was Darwas Dunley, a tavernkeeper in Reggiston; Mattie has always thought he was her biological father. When he died, she and her mother lost the tavern to Dunley's brother; Mattie went into service to Dowager Duchess of Whithorse Markellis in the Meadow House at Whithorse Estate and sent money home to her mother, who took in laundry.
Ansella's money takes them from poverty to comfortable gentility in Arren, where they live under the assumed name "Ambleson." In Arren, they have servants of their own, including the footman Rodder Pawl. Not long after arriving in Arren, Mattie falls in love at first sight with Adrik Adrikson, not knowing he's been tracking her from Reggiston and is definitely not who he seems.

She worked as a maidservant at Whithorse herself, when Temmin coerced her into letting him kiss and grope her. That incident brought her to the attention of Ansella and Harsin, who removed her from service at Whithorse, provided her with a dowry, gave her parents a small holding, and provided for an education for her siblings.
