The Nijan Empire, or Nija for short, is a political entity in An Intimate History of the Greater Kingdom.

It is the second "superpower" in the world, besides Tremont. It is bigger than Tremont in land mass and population, but has been politically and culturally isolated for some time. And while that isolation seems to be ending, the Nijan Emperor still doesn't let his children marry outside the Nijan nobility. Trade with Nija, although limited, mainly consists of silk, porcelain, spices, exotic woods and drugs. Nija is also know for its beautiful opals. The Nijan Emperor is considered sacred, and Nija does not follow the Tremontine/Sairish pantheon.

Some 400 years ago, Nija tried to conquer Sairland, which in turn appealed to Tremont for help. After the Tremontine fleet broke the Nijan blockade of Sairland's main port, Apecto, negotiations between the formerly quarrelsome nations of Sairland and Tremont started, which in time led to the Treaty of Ilhovin.
