Tremont Keep Layout

Tremont Keep started out as a small stone fortress. The modern sprawling structure ("the hallways have hallways!" as Camma once put it) has five main levels (which are not necessarily "level"):

Above Stairs
  • The main entrance floor consists of the grand entrance hall, the ballroom, the dining rooms, the main library, the formal sitting room, various other public reception rooms, and the morning room where the royal family usually breakfasts together in the Whithorse style.
  • The residential wing is where the royal family (including Lady Donnis) and their guests live and socialize. Known rooms on this level include separate suites (including a study, bedchamber, and wardrobe room) for each member of the royal family on the highest floors (the King's and Queen's rooms are connected by a double-doorway).
Below stairs
  • The mezzanine between the main floor and the residence floor is where the senior staff such as the King's Secretary, the ladies' maids, and the head chef live, plus guest rooms for the senior staff of any visitors.
  • The lower levels are where the servants work, including the kitchens, the mudroom, servants' baths, the day rooms of the Butler and Housekeeper, the laundry, the service entrance, and several others entrances that lead directly out into the various yards.
  • Even though technically above the residence floor, the servants actually sleep in the very top of the Keep, in its top floor. Because it's a servants' domain, it's still considered "below stairs," despite being the topmost floor.
Age of the Keep

The most modern part of the Keep is the royal residence built by the technologically progressive Temmin V shortly after the marriage of Harsin IV and Ansella. The residential wing has indoor plumbing but not all of the section has showers yet. The Keep's plumbing started a fad for bathrooms that is just now spreading beyond the capital's elite into the rural gentry and the capital's middle classes.

The oldest part of the Keep is its core; the Teacher's library, in a tower near the center of the edifice, is the most complete original portion of the Keep, the rest having been torn down and rebuilt several times. Most of the original stones are still part of the Keep, but they've been repurposed but for the library tower. Warin the Wise added at least one hall denoted by his crest (the entwined initials W and E, flanked by rabbits) over the archway. An adjoining wing that was added afterwards includes the windowless Blue Salon where Temmin and Sedra have entertained guests.
